
Why solar, and why now?
Between rising fuel prices, unstable grid supply, and falling battery costs, solar has moved from luxury to common sense for many Nigerian homes and businesses. This guide walks you through the parts of a solar system, what they cost in broad terms, and how to buy without getting burned.
The four building blocks
Every solar backup system is built from the same four blocks:
- Inverter — converts battery DC power to the AC your appliances use. Sized in kW (e.g. 4kW, 6kW, 8kW).
- Battery — stores energy. Lithium (LiFePO₄) is now the standard: 6,000+ cycles vs a few hundred for lead-acid.
- Solar panels — charge the battery free every day. Optional at first; many start with inverter + battery only.
- Charge controller/MPPT — manages solar charging (built into hybrid inverters and all-in-one stations).
Three ways to start

Inverter + battery, panels later: a 4–6kW hybrid inverter with 5–10kWh of lithium charges from NEPA and carries you through outages silently. Add panels any time — the inverter is already solar-ready.

How to buy safely
