
Your battery is the expensive part — protect it
In most systems the battery costs more than the inverter. How you treat it decides whether it lasts 3 years or 10. These five practices are simple and free.
The five habits
- 1. Avoid deep discharges to 0%. Even lithium prefers stopping around 10–20% remaining; set your inverter's cut-off accordingly.
- 2. Keep it cool. Heat ages batteries fast — install away from direct sun and generator exhaust, with ventilation space around the cabinet.
- 3. Charge it regularly. Batteries left flat for weeks degrade; if you travel, leave the system charging or have someone top it up monthly.
- 4. Use the right charge settings. Match inverter charge voltage/current to the battery's specification (your installer sets this once — don't 'adjust' it casually).
- 5. Tighten and inspect annually. Loose terminals create heat and voltage drop; a yearly check of connections and cables keeps the system efficient and safe.
Lithium vs lead-acid maintenance
Tubular/lead-acid batteries also need water top-ups and equalisation charges — miss them and lifespan collapses. LiFePO₄ batteries like itel's IPB/IPW/IPL range need none of that: the BMS manages cell balancing automatically, which is a big part of why lithium's cost per year of service is now lower despite the higher purchase price.
